New garden- and dry-pea breeding linesdeveloped by Agricultural Research Serviceand cooperating scientists may offergrowers added insurance against outbreaksof Aphanomyces root rot, a disease that cancause yield losses of 20 to 100 percent inthe legume crop.The moldlike culprit, Aphanomyceseuteiches, infects roots and undergroundstems of susceptible pea plants and otherlegumes, rotting them and causing stuntedgrowth, lesions, wilted leaves, and othersymptoms.
