La competitividad de la producción de papa (Solanum tuberosum) en el Municipio Pueblo Llano, estado Mérida, Venezuela

One definition of competitiveness is the possibility of a business, industry or country to maintain a share of the market, the internal market as well as the external one, with some level of given benefit. For this, a reference market, local, regional or national, should exist. The present article proposes to estimate some competitiveness indicators for potato production in Pueblo Llano Municipality, Mérida State (Venezuela). From these values, calculated from the relative participation in the market and from the quasi-production, determining factors for the competitiveness of potato production in the municipality were analyzed. The results obtained thus revealed the existence of a potential competitiveness of this rubric for the municipality under study. The potential competitiveness showed a 61% profit margin, a value which indicates a quasi-production of 11.804.887 Bolivares per hectare for the crop. On the other hand, an increase in the regional production’s participation in the domestic market was observed. Such a change can be attributed to the decrease in production of tubers in other regions of production in the country as well as to the opening and liberation process of the economy which has obligated producers to carry out a re-conversion of technology to produce potatoes.
