Water Quality Interventions Case Study: El-Salam Canal Area

Egypt has initiated many mega projects to cope with water and food security issues; which have encouraged the re-use of non-conventionalagricultural drainage water. One of these important mega projects is El-Salam Canal area in east north of Nile Delta. The Canal dependsmainly on fresh water from Damietta Nile Branch mixed with drainage water from agricultural Drains with ratio up to 1:1. Its water is usedin agriculture for, mainly, crops’ irrigation. Water quality monitoring data have been collected monthly for 13 years at different locationsalong the Canal and agricultural Drains within its catchment area. These data have been collected through the National Water QualityMonitoring program (NWQM), which is managed by National Water Research Center (NWRC), Egypt. Data processing and analysis ofwater quality data; collected from the canal and drains; have been done using statistical techniques. This includes descriptive statistics andMann-Whitney tests. The analyzed parameters are compared with the environmental standards (i.e.; national Law 48) to benchmark themaccording to international standards. The results indicate that the water quality of El-Salam Canal is mainly affected by deteriorated waterquality at downstream of Damietta Nile Branch. The water quality of Serw drainage catchment area has the significant impact on the waterquality of El Salam canal rather than Fraskour and Hadus drainage catchment areas. This study has successfully identified problematicdrainage areas and brought significant outcomes for water quality interventions of El-Salam Canal.
