ThepotentialoftheInternetasapoliticaltoolintriguesscientistsandpoliticiansalike.ParticularlyintheMiddleEast,themostfrequentnarrativeisthatthemereavailabilityofalternativesourcesofinformationwillempowerpoliticalactorsthataremarginalizedbythetraditionalmediacontrolledbyauthoritarianregimes.Indeed,theprotestmovementsinauthoritariancountriesinteractcreativelywiththisnewmediumtogettheirmessageacrossinanenvironmentmarkedbycensorshipandrepression.ComparingthepatternsofInternetuseforpoliticalmobilizationinEgyptandinTunisia,thisarticleshowshowtheInternetasarelativefreespacecanbeavitalfactorinopeningwindowsandexpandingtherealmofwhatcanbesaidinpublic.However,theInternetassuchappearsnottobesufficienttoradicallytransformthesocietyasawhole.Instead,thecaseofEgyptshowshowtraditionalmediasuchasthepresscanserveasabridgetothegeneralpublicsphere,helpingtooperateresultsofdiscussionsonlineandtotransformthenewlyacquiredspaceofdiscussionintoactualpoweronthestreet.
