On the Globalization of Political Power and the Added Relevance of Institutions in Contexts of Multifaceted Populism

This paper is an essay on the problematc of the globalizaton of politcal power andon the increased relevance of insttutons in contexts of multfaceted populism. A casestudy of the Portuguese justce system was used to illustrate the arguments presented.First, the Troika interventon in Portugal is o?ered as an instance of globalizaton ofpolitcal power. Secondly, a model of argumentaton analysis of politcal partes is usedto contend that the media coverage of the discourse about austerity during the periodof external interventon consttuted what can be called multfaceted populism. Finally,the Directorate-General for Justce Policy is presented as an example of the decisiveand increased role that insttutons can play in tmes of crisis by presentng a factualand dispassionate vision of the results obtained at the level of public policies.
