LiteraturesuggeststhatteachingInformationLiteracy(IL)asanintellectualframework,ratherthanasetofcomputer-basedtools,canbechallengingfornumerousreasons.Atthesametime,otherarticlesdescribetheuniquevalueofusinghands-oninvestigationsofspecialcollectionsmaterialstofacilitatethedevelopmentofcriticalthinkingskillsandILindiscipline-specificcontextsforupper-levelstudents.ThisarticlereportsonacollaborationbetweenanILinstructorandaspecialcollectionslibrariantocreateahands-onspecialcollectionsexperienceforentry-levelILstudents.WefoundthatexposingthesestudentstothesematerialscanimprovetheirILandresearchskills.Weexplainourmethodsfordesigningandassessingsuchclasssessions,andreportonourresultswithstudents.
