Keeping Pace with Information Literacy Instruction for the Real World: When Will MLS Programs Wake Up and Smell the LILACs?

Foroverthirtyyears,numerousstudieshavediscussedthecontradictionbetweenthegrowingimportanceofinformationliteracyinstructiontotheLibrary’scoremissionandlackofpedagogicaltrainingfornewlibrarians.Thisarticlereviewsthemorerecentcontributionsonthetopic,presentsasurveyofNewYorkStateMLScurriculaanddescribesinitiativesofpedagogytrainingofferedinthatregionoutsideofMLSprograms.TheauthorsfocusontheLibraryInstructionLeadershipAcademy(LILAC),aninnovative,semester-longtrainingprogramcreatedinWesternNewYorkStatetoofferinstructioninthepedagogicalfoundationandpracticalexperienceessentialforteachinginformationliteracyskillseffectively.Theyprovidedetailsoftheprogram’scontent,organization,funding,assessmentmethods,andlearningoutcomes.WhileregionalinitiativeslikeLILACprovetobeveryvaluabletotheirparticipants,theauthorsaimtoapplypressureonMLSprogramstoestablishcurricularrequirementsbettersuitedtothedemandsoftoday#039;slibrarianship.
