Toinvestigatethefeasibilityofusingdeerandsheepasanimalmodelsforthehumanspine,wecomparedthemicroarchitecturaldimensionsofthedeerandsheepspinesandwithhumandata.Tothisend,weadoptedthetraditionalbonetissuemorphometricmethod,usingfigureanalysissoftwareforquantitativeanalysisof2Dimagesofbonetissue.Comparedwiththoseofhumans,thelumbarcancellousboneofdeerandsheephashighermicroarchitecturalindices,moredenselypackedbonetrabeculae,lowerporosity,andhigherbonemass.Despitespecificdifferencesinvariousmorphologicindices,theanisotropyoflumbarcancellousboneindeerandsheepshowsthesametrendasthatinhumans.
