Modified Procedure for Implantation of Subcutaneous Central Venous Access Devices in Macaques (Macaca mulatta)

Anonhumanprimatemodelcomprisingadultmalerhesusmonkeys(Macacamulatta)withchronicallyindwellingsubcutaneouscentralvenousaccessdevicesprovidesauniqueopportunitytodetermineplasmapharmacokineticsofnewdrugssuchasanticancerandanti-retroviralagents.Thecentralvenousaccessweuseisalow-profile,single-septum,titaniumportthatisattachedtoaradiopaque,indwellingcatheter;thecatheterisimplantedinaninternaljugularvein.Acommoncomplicationfollowingplacementofthevenousaccessdevicewasmigrationofthecathetertip.Wethereforemodifiedthestandardprocedurebycuttingthesiliconecatheterandintroducingtherigidconnectortosecurethecathetertothevesselattheinsertionsite(approximately9to13cmfromthedistalendofthecatheter).Priortotheuseoftheconnector,threeoffivecathetersmigratedwithin4weeksafterplacement.Incontrast,all13internaljugularcatheterswithconnectorshaveremainedpatentwithoutmigrationofthecathetertip.Therefore,incorporationofthecatheterconnectorappearstohaveeliminatedtheproblemofcathetermigration.
