Developmentofcatheter-tractinfectionsinexperimentalanimalscanhavedevastatingconsequencesonanimalhealthandthefunctionallifespanofsurgicalimplants.Tomeasuretheincidenceofcatheter-tractinfectionsinanimalswithexteriorizedintravenouscathetersinthisfacilityandassesstheeffectsoftheseinfectionsonmeancatheterlifespan,healthrecordsof31Macacamulattawithcatheterswerereviewed.RecordsspannedtheintervalofJanuary1,1996throughOctober1,1997.Catheter-tractinfectionsin16of53(30.2%)monkeyswithcatheterswerediagnosedbasedonacombinationofclinicalsignsofinfectionandresultsofbacterialculture.Segmentalcatheter-tractinfectionsreducedmeancatheterlifespanto147days,comparedwith354daysforuninfectedcatheters.Exit-wound,localtunnel,andsurgical-siteinfectionsdidnotsignificantlyreducecatheterlifespan.Bacterialculturereportsdocumented31isolates;41.9%(13of31)werecoagulase-negativestaphylococci,and22.6%(7of31)wereStaphylococcusaureus.Of20isolatestested,15(75%)wereresistanttomethicillin/oxacillininvitro.Antimicrobialsusceptibilitytestingofmethicillin-resistantandmethicillin-susceptibleisolatesindicatedthat,comparedwithmethicillin-sensitiveisolates,methicillinresistantisolateshadapatternofmultipleantibioticresistance.Catheter-tractinfectionswerecommoninthiscolonyofrhesusmacaques,andclinicallysevereinfectionscausedadrasticreductionincatheterlifespan.Approximatelyhalf(48%)thebacterialisolatesweremethicillin-resistantgram-positivebacteria.
