Ovarianepithelialcarcinomaisthemostcommonformofovariancancer,causingmoredeathsthananyothercancerinwomenwithgynecologicmalignanciesintheUnitedStates.Thepooroutcomeforwomenwithlate-stageovariancancerunderscorestheneedforearlydetectionstrategiesandfornewtreatmentoptionstobedeveloped.High-intensityfocusedultrasound(HIFU)isatherapeuticmodalitythatissafeandeffectiveagainstvarioustypesofsolidtumors,andhasthepotentialtoserveasatreatmentforovariancancer.Useofanappropriateanimalmodelisimportantinobtainingrelevantdatafortranslationalresearch.Thepurposeofthestudyreportedherewastomodifyandcreateanimmunocompetentorthotopictumorisograftmodelforevaluationofintra-operativeHIFUapplication.Thismodelwouldresembletheclinicalpresentationofhumanpatientswithlate-stageovariancancer.Wewereabletoconsistentlyproduceasurgicalmodelthatpresentedwithasinglelarge,intra-abdominaltumornodulewithintheleftovarianbursa,aswellasmultiplesmallnodulesonthesurfaceofotherorgansandtissues.Thistechniquemayalsobeusedtorefineothertumormodels,usingtheovarianbursaasanimplantsiteforheterotopictumorisografts.
