Thestudyreportedherewasdonetodeterminetherelationshipbetweenanesthesiadepthandbispectralindex(BIS)instimulatedpigs.Isofluraneminimalalveolarconcentration(MAC)wasdeterminedusingthetail-clampmethodin16Yorkshire/Landrace-crosspigswithmean±SEMweightof27.7±1.76kg.Oneweeklater,BIS,ECG,heartrate,arterialbloodpressure,esophagealtemperature,end-tidalCOsubxmlns="http://pub2web.metastore.ingenta.coms/"2/subtensionandisofluraneconcentration,arterialpH,PaOsubxmlns="http://pub2web.metastore.ingenta.coms/"2/sub,PaCOsubxmlns="http://pub2web.metastore.ingenta.coms/"2/sub,plasmabicarbonateconcentration,andbaseexcessweredeterminedateachoffiveisofluraneMAC-multiples:0.8,1.0,1.3,1.6,and2.0.Sixtreatmentswerestudied:isoflurane;isofluraneandatracurium;isoflurane,atracurium,andfentanyl;isofluranewithnoxiousstimulation;isofluraneandatracuriumwithnoxiousstimulation;andisoflurane,atracurium,andfentanylwithnoxiousstimulation.ThenoxiousstimulusduringBISmeasurementwasthesameasthatforMACdetermination.Eachpigwasstudiedthreetimes(n=8),andorderofMAC-multiplesandtreatmentswasrandomized.Datawereevaluatedbyuseofgenerallinearmodelanalysisofvarianceandlinearregressionanalysis,withstatisticalsignificancesetatP0.05.SignificantdifferencesinBISvalueswereidentifiedbetweenMAC-multipleswithineachtreatmentandbetweentreatment3comparedwithtreatments2and4.Significantdifferencesalsowereobservedwithinandbetweentreatmentsforheartrate,arterialbloodpressure,andPaOsubxmlns="http://pub2web.metastore.ingenta.coms/"2/sub.UseofBISappearsreliableforidentificationoflightversusdeepanesthesia,butisoflimitedusefordiscriminationbetweenisofluraneMAC-multiplesof1and1.6.Weconcludethat,comparedwithothertreatments,atracuriumandnoxiousstimulationhadnosignificanteffectonBIS.
