Lacrimal Gland Myoepithelioma in a Rhesus Macaque (Macaca mulatta)

An18-year-oldrhesusmacaque(Macacamulatta)developedptosisoftheleftuppereyelidduetoamassthathadfirstbeenobserved10yearspreviously.The11×7×7-mmmasswassurgicallyexcised,andtheptosisresolvedafter5days.Histologicexaminationofthemassrevealedtwoconfluentcellpopulations.Mostcellswerespindle-shapedandwerearrangedinloosefascicles.Smallernumbersofcellshadsquamousdifferentiation.Thespindle-shapedcellsexpressedsmoothmuscleactin.Cellswithsquamousdifferentiationdidnotexpresssmoothmuscleactin,butdid,alongwitharoundhalfofthespindle-shapedcells,expresspan-cytokeratin.Onthebasisofhistologicandimmunohistochemicalfindings,themasswasdiagnosedasmyoepithelioma.Theneoplasmmostlikelyoriginatedfromthepalpebrallobeofthelacrimalgland,althoughaccessorylacrimalglandorigincouldnotbeexcluded.Recurrenceoftheneoplasmhasnotbeenobserved6monthsaftersurgery.
