Anumberoffactorshavepotentialuseasindicatorsofanimalwell-being.Classicandpracticalcriteriaforassessinganimalwell-beingareacombinationofgeneralhealthstatus,clinicalsignsofdisease,andperformance.Numerousregulatorymechanismsandsystemsareresponsibleformanyneurochemicalandendocrinechangesinresponsetoarousingandstimulatingevents.Neuroendocrinechangesassociatedwithaversivestimulihavebeenimplicatedinmodulationofimmuneresponses.Animalbehaviorandpreference,whichcanbeobserveddirectlyandnoninvasively,canbeusefulinassessmentofwell-being.Aversiveconditions,especiallylongerterm,cancausemorphologicandpathologicchangesinsometissues.
