Macaquesareaparticularlyvaluablenonhumanprimatemodelforawidevarietyofbiomedicalresearchendeavors.Bvirus(Cercopithecineherpesvirus1;BV)isan#945;-herpesvirusthatnaturallyinfectsconventionalpopulationsofmacaques.SeriousdiseaseduetoBVisrareinmacaques,butwhentransmittedtohumans,BVhasapropensitytoinvadethecentralnervoussystemandhasafatalityrategreaterthan70%ifnottreatedpromptly.ThesevereconsequencesofhumanBVinfectionsledtotheinclusionofBVintheoriginalNIHlistoftargetvirusesforeliminationbydevelopmentofspecificpathogen-freerhesuscolonies.Inmacaquesandespeciallyinhumans,diagnosisofBVinfectionisnotstraightforward.Furthermore,developmentandmaintenanceoftrueBVspecificpathogen-freemacaquecolonieshasprovendifcult.InthisoverviewwereviewthenaturalhistoryofBVinmacaques,summarizewhatisknownaboutthevirusatthemolecularlevel,andrelatethisinformationtoproblemsassociatedwithdiagnosisofBVinfectionsanddevelopmentofBV-freemacaquecolonies.
