Degenerativespinaldiseaseisaleadingcauseofchronicdisabilitybothinhumansandanimals.Althoughwidelyseenasanormaloccurrenceofaging,degenerativespinaldiseasecanbecausedbyvariousgenetic,iatrogenic,inflammatory,andcongenitalfactors.Theobjectiveofthisstudywastocharacterizethedegenerativespine-relateddiseasesandtheageatonsetinarandomsubpopulationof20captiverhesusmonkeys(Macacamulatta;male,13;female,7;age:range,4to27y;median,18.5y).Spinalradiographicevaluation(leftlateral,rightlateral,andventrodorsalviews)ofthespinalcolumn(C1toS1)wasperformed,andspinaldegenerativediseasewasscored.Theincidenceofosteopathologywashigherinthe14-to18-y-oldgroup,butincidencedidnotdifferaccordingtosex.Inthestudiedpopulation,degenerativechangeswerepresentinmonkeysasyoungas9yofage.
