Medicina Integrativa: efectos de la acupuntura y su aplicacin clnica en la medicina convencional

La acupuntura ha sido utilizada hace ms de 3 000 mil aos en la medicina tradicional china. En la actualidad, la Organizacin Mundial de la Salud (OMS) reconoce esta prctica para el manejo integral del dolor y de otras condiciones clnicas. Su aplicacin para el manejo del dolor crnico y refractario a los tratamientos convencionales es considerada como una terapia til, segura, efectiva y placentera no slo para el manejo del dolor, sino tambin para disminuir los efectos adversos producidos por los tratamientos oncolgicos. En los ltimos 15 aos, el NationalInstitutes of Health junto con el National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health han realizado mltiples estudios cientficos, logrando identificar muchos de los mecanismos neurolgicos por los cuales la acupuntura logra su efecto teraputico. En la actualidad la medicina integrativa hace parte de la oferta acadmica de muchas universidades,hospitales e instituciones dedicadas a la educacin mdica, con el fin de ampliar el manejo integral del paciente, abarcando su enfermedad desde el contexto integral del ser y permitiendo quela evidencia determine su aplicacin clnica.En Medicina no se puede rechazar un tratamiento por ignorancia y desconocimiento, por esto es necesario que bajo la evidencia cientfica se logren validar los tratamientos, permitiendo conocer cules son las opciones integrales, seguras y efectivas para que los pacientes mejorar su calidad de vida.ABSTRACTAcupuncture has been practiced in traditional Chinese medicine for more than 3000 years; currently, the World Health Organization (WHO) acknowledges this practice for the integrative pain management and other clinical conditions. Its application for the chronic and refractory pain managementwith conventional treatments, allows it to be a useful, secure, effective and pleasant therapy not only for the pain management, but also to decrease the adverse effects of oncologic treatments. In the last 15 years the National Institutes of Health altogether with the National Center for Complementaryand Alternative Medicine allowed conducting multiple scientific studies, to enable the identification of the neurologic mechanisms through which acupuncture achieves its therapeuticeffects. Nowadays integrative medicine is part of the academic offer of many universities, hospitals and institutions dedicated to the medical education worldwide, with the aim of optimizingthe integrative management of the patient, addressing the disease in the holistic context of the being and allowing evidence to determine the clinical application of this type of treatments.In medicine treatments cannot be rejected due to ignorance or lack of information, therefore it necessary to be able to validate treatments based on scientific evidence, to allow us to find which are the integrative, secure and effective optionsso that patients can improve their quality of life.
