Government Publications: Their Role in the National Program for Library and Information Services

Government documents, those ubiquitous publications on everything from how to grow tomatoesat home to design requirements for nuclear reactors, have been with us since the founding of the nation. (The Constitution is undoubtedly the first, although it has neither a SUDOCS classification number nor a GPO stock number.) Government publications at all levels-federal, state, and local-have been studied, discussed, and despaired over throughout the modern history of librarianship. Now yet another study attempts to analyze the problem and recommend solutions. This study was prepared at the request of NCLIS, so it is not surprising that its recommendations should closely correspond with those in the Goals for Action, despite the disclaimer printed on the verso of the cover.
