摘要

Medical reference librarians have known for a long time that one of the likely places to look forbiographical information on relatively obscure American physicians is in the volume indexes of such periodicals as the Journal of the American Medical Association. This strategem works best, of course, when one knows the death dates of the individual in question; otherwise searching is a rather tedious and laborious chore. It would seem useful, therefore, to provide an index to these sorts of "biographical fragments" as the compiler has attempted to do here. Barr claims two objectives: (1) to locate both biographical information and contemporary comment "fragmentary and extensive concerning distinguished persons who prior to about 1920 were active in the sciences," and (2) to locate the same information about lesser-known scientists in the same period.
