T HE Shaman was the Indian Medicine Man. He figured prominently among the Northwest Coast Indian tribes. Dr. Forrest E. Clements published at the University of California in 1932 his thesis on "Primitive Concepts of Disease." These included: Sorcery by persons skilled in magic or by individuals capable of causing evil spirits or demons to lodge in the body. Breach of taboo. Sickness was punished by the gods for breach of religious or social prohibitions. The Shaman became the intermediary for placating the gods.
