How do you do blood transfusions whenyou have no medical equipment, no donorsand no blood? This is a question that comesup all too frequently in sub-Saharan Africa, where blood donations in many countriesfail to meet the demand for transfusionsand where clinics, particularly those inremote rural areas, are underequipped. In the absence of blood and equipment, patients in need of transfusion – such aswomen haemorrhaging as a result of a rupturedectopic pregnancy – are forced to fallback on a crude form of auto-transfusionusing kitchen equipment.
