A Comparison of Library of Congress Subject Headings and Medical Subject Headings

THE Yale Medical Library, together with the Columbia and Harvard Medical Libraries, has recently decided to adopt Medical Subject Headings (MeSH), second edition, 1963, for use in a catalog computerization project. The Yale Medical Library has been using Library of Congress subject headings, and the present study was designed to determine to what extent Library of Congress headings that have been used in the Yale Medical Library are adequately represented by subject headings in Medical Subject Headings. Presumably the findings will be approximately applicable in other medical libraries.
