Vienna, one hundred years ago, was the great medical teaching center of the -world as it was to be for generations to follow. The autopsy table was surrounded by eager students, and patlhology, gross and microscopic, was carefully studied and taught. But the knowledge of the relationship of cause to effect in disease, in so far as the role of infection (bacterial) was concerned, wvas as yet an unopened book.
