Bertha Brandon Hallam (1895-1982)

Born in Excelsior, Minnesota, Miss Hallam was the eldest daughter of Dorcas and William Hallam. In 1912, her family moved to Portland, Oregon, where she graduated from high school. She entered an apprentice training program offered at the Library Association of Portland. When this was completed after eight or nine months, she was employed in the children's department of that library, where she worked for five years. In 1919, there was an opening at the University of Oregon Medical School, where she became the first librarian and continued in that position until her retirement in 1965. In 1931 she received her B.A. degree from the University of Oregon, after several years of night classes, correspondence courses, and a final year in residence.
