DERECKTOR SHIPYARDS, long known for its shipyards in Mamaroneck, New York, and Dania Beach, Florida, has signed a deal to renovate Florida's Port of Fort Pierce into a refit facility for power and sailing yachts bigger than 200 feet. "We are limited to 900 tons; everybody else is similarly limited," says John Koenig, Derecktor's head of communications. At the new site, he says, Derecktor will have 28 feet of water right up to the bulkhead and a 1,500-ton Travelift with no overhead restrictions such as bridges. "We will have the ability to compete with the European yards for refit work on the 150-, 180-, 200-foot sailing yachts," he says. "Perini Navi sent us a very nice letter of encouragement, saying they're excited to have the option of a place they'll be able to rely on and trust and recommend."
