CAD and its impact on engineering design

My recall isn't perfect and neither is it so for those I have consulted in drawing together these reflections but I think I have captured the essence of what has happened over the last 30 years and some of why it came about. It may surprise many to learn that the majority of today's installed world-wide CAD base has its roots in England and France. Parasolid and ACIS, two of the most widely used 'generic' solid modelling kernels came out of research (and people) from Cambridge University and now there are hundreds of CAD/CAM/CAE applications that are installed worldwide in tens of thousands of businesses.
