Offshore wind farms could quadruple output capacity

The announcement coincided with the launch of the new licensing regime for cable connections to the mainland and the third round of leasing in UK waters for offshore wind farms.rnOffshore wind is fundamental to the government's energy targets, which include some 15% of the UK's electrical supplies coming from renewables by 2020, and a reduction in CO2 emissions of 80% by 2050. If the 33GW capacity is achieved by 2020, this will supply a quarter of all UK electricity needs.
