Montgomery County Detention Facility

The Montgomery County Commission hired Goodwyn, Mills and Cawood to design the new state-of-the-art Montgomery Detention Facility located in Downtown Montgomery, Ala. The massive structure opened in September 2009 and inmates were moved into it in October 2009. The existing structure, built in the 1980's, was overcrowded and at capacity-the structure was housing almost twice as many inmates as planned for. In order to maximize the budget allocated, GMC renovated the original facility and added a new building to house an additional 696 prisoners. The existing kitchen and laundry spaces were completely overhauled to accommodate the increased inmate population. The old structure is now used for maximum-security prisoners as it is fitted with the appropriate cells for them.
