If you don't already know, 2004 represents the 60th year of NDTA's existence. Anniversaries, like birthdays, are extra special when they end in a zero, so it seems an appropriate time for reflection on NDTA's past achievements and future possibilities. Our organization has always been a tireless supporter of and advocate for meeting defense transportation needs utilizing both civilian and military resources. Buying and maintaining an organic fleet of ships and aircraft large enough to meet wartime-movement needs has always been fiscally impossible. Similarly, simply confiscating commercial assets in time of war is untenable as well. The solution was, and has been, for both sides to work together to provide for America's contingency transportation needs within the framework of a free-market economy. The NDTA provides the Forum (pun intended) for facilitating that process and has been instrumental in the creating of a Defense Transportation System (DTS) that continues to be highly adaptive and able to meet the needs of national defense both in peacetime and in war.
