The security services of Azerbaijan during the weekend of October 26-28, 2007, completed the rolling back of an Islamist-jihadist network which was ready to strike, among other objectives, the US and UK embassies in Baku. Although the threat was largely removed, the British Embassy in Baku remains closed while the US Embassy conducts only limited operations for now. On the night of October 26-27, 2007, the Azerbaijani security services raided country house No. 104 in the settlement of Mastaqa, 20 miles north-east of Baku, where a group of jihadist terrorists was hiding. In the morning, the raid evolved into a shootout with the group inside. After a brief siege, the security forces stormed the house. One of the jihadists threw a grenade at the troops and was immediately shot. Two other jihadists were captured but a couple of other jihadists succeeded in escaping. Three assault rifles, several grenades, ammunition, and documents were discovered at the country house.
