One gets the sense that many British and US veterans could relate to the title and thesis of Theo Farrell's masterful analysis of the first 15 years of the ongoing war in Afghanistan. Indeed, Farrell himself is no stranger to the war, nor the country, having served as an advisor to the British Government, the British Army and General Stanley McChrystal on the conflict. As a result, much of the evidence in this excellently researched book is based on information from sources that most writers and academics could only hope to gain access to, including senior government and military personnel in Britain, the US and Afghanistan, and operational and tactical commanders. The book is leant even more credibility by the author's strong links - shared with fellow Irishman Michael Semple - into theTaliban. Farrell, then, is extremely well placed to provide an authoritative account of Britain's war in Afghanistan.
