The operational capability of the dismounted soldier has increased over recent years with the introduction of a number of powered systems, allowing faster communications, better surveillance and night vision, and more-efficient target acquisition. The trade-off for these improvements has been an increase in the weight the soldier has to carry, and an extra task for the logistics chain in maintaining the supply of batteries that keep the systems functioning.
