A need for an integrated fixed communication infrastructure across the defence forces emerged as far back as 1993, and resulted in a public call for tender published in 1995, ultimately leading to a contract with BT Defence in 1997. This contract in effect ushered in one of the first Private Finance Initiative (PFI)-based Defence Fixed Telecommunication Service (DFTS) projects in the world.The project has since provided a cross-service platform that replaced 19 separate legacy networks serving the British Army, the Royal Navy, and the Royal Air Force, as well as the MoD itself.
