The current situation in Afghanistan means that improvised explosive devices (IEDs) are rarely out of the news. Making them safe is still largely the domain of the British Army. However, in March 2010, members of the Royal Air Force's 5131 Bomb Disposal Squadron will join the Counter-IED Task Force in Afghanistan and bring their expertise to the front line.
