Britain's Armed Forces command the respect and admiration of the public and our allies. To visit them on operations is to feel humbled by the sheer quality of the men and women at all levels. Yet, under the last government, the structures that directed and organised them lost direction. The Strategic Defence and Security Review (SDSR) presented the incoming Coalition Government with a near-intractable problem; ministers had to break out of an ugly triangle of economic crisis, operational pressures and a range of fixed, badly negotiated, long-term contracts.
