Libya's legacy

Makeshift 'museums' displaying a large range of leftover munitions attract hundreds of curious visitors every day on the streets of Misrata, Libya's third largest city. A wide variety of explosive weapons have been identified in these improvised stockpiles, including numerous cluster munitions, air-to-surface rockets and one instance of a 500kg bomb. The 'museum' on Tripoli Street in the downtown district of the city is amongst the largest and is intended as a reminder of what happened here at the site of intense fighting between the rebels and Gaddafi's forces. But many of the munitions are still fused, with neither the organisers nor visitors having any idea of what is safe and what is not. Should there be an accidental detonation, the human cost would be catastrophic.
