Western Europe's recent battles have been fought in austere global regions where traditional communications systems, designed for industrial warfare, are not always suitable. Whereas line-of-sight transmissions (ie. VHF/UHF radios) will remain a primary channel, there is an ongoing UOR for beyond line-of-sight (BLOS) capability. Commanders need full access to common operating pictures (COP) displaying information on, and location of, all army, air force and naval assets for near real-time situational command and control. In regions such as Afghanistan, this can only initially be achieved with reliable, low latency, satellite communications.
