Established in 2001, the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) has been present in Afghanistan since 2003, its area of operation expanding from Kabul in the earlier years to cover the majority of the country at present. Encompassing troops and civilian staff from more than 50 nations, ISAF is tasked by NATO with assisting the Afghan government in establishing a secure environment - protecting against insurgents and aiding the growth and socioeconomic development of the nation for future sustainability. In addition, ISAF helps with the reconstruction and development of Afghan land areas, and also assists with humanitarian efforts in the region.
