Identified by Sir Humphry Davy in 1811, HC10 was first produced consistently by Davy's student Michael Faraday through his electrolysis machine. However, HC10 is very unstable once it is subjected to ultraviolet light, and therefore has had limited usefulness to date, lasting only minutes or, at best, hours. HC10 is a blend of hydrogen, chlorine and oxygen that produces hypochlorous acid, which is one of the mammalian defence mechanisms found in the white blood cells known as neutrophils. When skin is cut and pathogens enter, neutrophils are released from the bloodstream where they migrate towards the pathogen, via the human chemotaxis process, in order to encapsulate and destroy it with an oxidative burst.
