摘要

One of the most common bandwagons that companies and organisations jump onto at the moment is that of sustainable development. The policy shapers will seize hold of this buzz term and, without truly understanding its meaning, trumpet their 'green' credentials to all and sundry. But they, like most people, think that this simply means reducing their carbon footprint, their electricity use and the amount of waste that is not recycled. The interesting thing about reducing electricity use is the concomitant reduction in operating costs. Reducing the carbon footprint is now mandatory for organisations in the UK - or at least reporting of their CO_2 position, hence providing open source information about how good or bad they are, has come onto the statute books. Paying for waste removal is more expensive than recycling, so once again, under the banner of being 'green', operating costs can be reduced and legislative imperatives can be satisfied.
