There was always a need to upgrade the small conventional weapons into fully automatic, computer controlled, agile and intelligent battlefield machines. These aspects opened a new horizon in weapon research and up gradation and so a computer software controlled working prototype for Light Machineguns has been developed. The system contains a fully computerized mechanical robot with an attached camera as its eye. The weapon system has a unique functionality to distinguish between a friend and a foe, thus has less chances of any friendly fire incidents. Laser technology is used to implement the friend and foe system. The system is composed of two micro controllers, which are responsible for movement of the mechanical mount, friend and foe detection system. A special jacket for soldiers has also been developed to support the friend and foe detection system. The mechanical mount is designed to sustain in a battlefield environment. The system can be implemented on the front battlefield bunkers or on any military installation for security purposes so that the soldier sitting at a distant place can control the system and engage enemy threats. The army can mount the weapon system on high peaks without risking a soldier's life (climb the peak and sit in severe weather conditions). We are also implementing the automatic motion sensing and target acquiring capability by using advanced image processing techniques. Connection with an anti-aircraft radar system makes the system a more flexible weapon for low flying aircrafts. Further research is going on to improve the system so as to increase its stability in real warfare conditions.
