August is not a good month for military dictators, Gen Ziaul Haq died in an air crash on August 1 7th, 20 years later, almost to the day, Gen Pervez Musharraf was forced to resign as President on August 18, 2008. He could have gone earlier and on his own terms, in the circumstances he is lucky to have left the office with a dignified guard of honour drawn from all the three Services of the Armed Forces, and continue to stay in the secure compound that he did as Army Chief (and President) till his own house is completed. Musharraf did many good things for Pakistan in his first 3 years of assuming power, he compromised almost all the credit accrued in the next 5 years by trying to hang onto power.
