The Ghoragali Spirit

During the mid 19~(th) century a considerable part of what now constitutes the Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtoonkhwa (KPK) was Sikh-ruled territory, this was wrested from their control for the British by Henry Lawrence and his group of fellow officers seconded to East India Company's civil service. The "Soldier Sahibs" included Nicholson conquering KPK north of Indus River and Abbott who captured Hazara (Abbottabad is still named after him) while Henry Lawrence and his brother, John Lawrence, took most of Punjab from the Sikhs. The conquest of Punjab cost the British, they incurred a heavy debt.
