East India Company (EIC) army in India consisted of Indian soldiers known as sepoys and British officers. This arrangement continued when the Crown took direct control of Indian affairs in 1858. An intermediate cadre of Indian officers later known as Viceroy's Commissioned Officers (VCOs) were a link between Indian soldiers and British officers, however even the senior most VCO was subordinate to the junior most British officer.
