In this exercise, we show students the importance of applying the correct modeling and analysis of a real business problem. In the process, we demonstrate the use of the TREND function and highlight that applying a supposedly scientific approach like this does not necessarily mean that it will be happily welcomed by the people who have to be responsible for ensuring successful attainment of the propounded results. The whole purpose of modeling is to support good analysis, the end results of which must lead to actionable responses. This exercise sets out to bring these aspects to life in a simple and yet effective real-life exercise in decision support. The Excel worksheets developed can be used by managers as a true decision-support tool. For instructors, we know that the exercise will help you get as much interest, class participation, and learning out of your students as it did for ours.
