摘要

Almost all storage media are multilayer structures consisting of various materials. There is always a recording layer, which carries the information bits. In addition, there is a substrate, a buffer layer, and a protective layer. The combination of these materials is optimized in a number of ways to provide better performance for a given medium. Formation of each layer in such a multilayer structure typically relies upon natural processes that bring each of the material structures to a state of equilibrium. Often, experimental evidence demonstrates that even for very thin metal films, those that are only a few atomic layers thick, the crystal and electronic structure of the thin film closely approaches the properties of the corresponding bulk material. That's particularly important, since the properties of the bulk material are considered to be fairly well-known.
