Fonterra is the second largest milk processor in the world and manufactures a range of ingredients from whey, including whey protein concentrates (WPCs), whey protein isolates (WPI), whey powder, lactalbumin and milk minerals. The whey factories also produce ingredient streams for the production of lactose and other whey-based foods. Fonterra was formed in 2001 from various dairy companies and the firm inherited a range of diverse whey processing factories at 11 sites within New Zealand. Fonterra exports 95 per cent of the solids in the 14 billion litres of milk per year in New Zealand it processes, which generates over NZD 12 billion (?6.9 billion) in revenue. Over two million tonnes per year of dairy products are manufactured at 23 sites in New Zealand. A range of milk powders, cheese, protein products and lactose products is produced.
