Despite a relaunch in 2008, Danone is to pull its 'beauty-from-the-inside' spoonable yogurt, Essensis, from French retail shelves next month (March). In a report in the UK Financial Times, Danone cited the impact of the burgeoning economic recession as a major factor in its decision. However, the 'dermo-nutrition' product will remain on sale in Spain, Belgium and Italy. Danone launched Essensis in February 2007, but despite sales initially soaring to around £35 million (€40m) they quickly plummeted as consumers failed to connect with both the product's functional promise and its premium pricing.
