A 9.6% increase in the number of cows culled in the UK has led to the National Farmers Union to call for increased controls. Defra released figures that show 38,010 cows were slaughtered in 2012, the highest number in a decade. These come despite increased cattle controls and stricter on-farm biosecurity measures introduced in July 2012.
