Sensient Technology Corporation's Food Colors Europe business has been under the corporate umbrella since 2000, but its roots in the colouring industry go back much further. Dr Roland Beck, managing director of Sensient Food Colors Europe, explains that its Geesthacht location is the site where Alfred Nobel made the first dynamite, as a site by the river Elba was needed to ship out the volatile product. "The current company started in 1946, manufacturing hair dyes, emulsifiers, and whatever else was needed in post-war Germany," he notes. "In the 1970s and 1980s, the son took over and focused the company on colours, particularly natural colours. The third generation sold the business to Sensient in the US in 2000. We are a primarily a producers of natural colours using botanic raw materials for food colourings, for the food, pharma and cosmetic businesses. We are now one of the oldest colour companies in Europe. We produce, extract and formulate, so we have to identify what property can we formulate for a given application."
